Delta Blues. It whispers and shouts of places beyond flesh and bone. Doc MacLean was accompanist to some of the Mississippi's finest Delta songsters. Today, nearly thirty years after his first acoustic recordings and blues festival appearances, Doc MacLean is being rediscovered by a new generation of Delta blues audiences.
Since 1974 Doc MacLean has appeared at significant blues, folk and heritage festivals. Don't expect any shopworn standards from the jukebox of Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters. Influenced instead by some of their greatest teachers, Doc MacLean draws on earlier and older Delta roots. As part of an unbroken chain, his is the deeply codified, spiritual experience associated more with Charlie Patton and Son House.
Repertoire tied at once to the living and the dead, to the daylight and to the darkness. Minstrel show. Jug band. Hokum. Ragtime. Gospel. Country blues and his own compositions. Doc MacLean is a unique and powerful songster-entertainer in the Delta tradition. His music and stories bring special color to a wide variety of festival workshops.
See him in an intimate, solo acoustic setting- or on a larger, louder stage with his rhythm section. Doc MacLean. Delta Blues. One of the few contemporary artists working in the Tradition.
